What tradition is that? I hear you ask. Well, it’s my habit of writing blog posts that are always much longer than I intend. This week, and maybe for a few weeks hence (unless I find a way to type at speed single-handed), my blog will probably be shorter – the reason being another kind of break.
Last Thursday, we were walking Zoe in our nearby nature reserve when I slipped on a muddy patch, fell, and broke my wrist. Contrary to what everyone thought, the only connection it had to Zoe was the fact we were walking her at the time, but it could have happened anyway. I’ve always walked a lot. Since our old Sindy died, I’ve put myself on my imaginary lead and taken myself off for a constitutional every day, so it’s lovely now to have the extra reason to go. Anyway, Zoe wasn’t pulling at all; it was my own silly slip of the foot, or off the foot, in this case.
Now, of course, I’m learning how many things are difficult with one hand, but I’m finding the challenge of workarounds quite fun. Shove a jar in the crook of your arm and you can unscrew the top, or put tubes between your knees to do the same. I haven’t found a way to chop carrots yet without having the pieces shoot across the kitchen and disappear under the fridge, but I will. On the other hand, I’m having to chop sleeves off tee shirts to get them over the cast, but at least I can dress myself. In the end, it could be worse as it’s my left hand, and being very right-handed, I can manage quite well.
So, before I give myself RSI as well, I’ll love you and leave you with a photo of my jaunty red appendage.
Very sorry to hear this, Val. Sending sincere wishes for a prompt return to two-handedness! James Ember.
ReplyDeleteThank you, James. That’s really very good of you. I should write these kind digital words on my cast since no one can do it in person. :)
DeleteOh dear, Val, you had A Fall! Rotten luck to break a wrist and heartfelt sympathies to you as you work around the kitchen. It sounds like quite a nuisance and you will have to go shopping for new tee shirts when you recover :) Get Well Soon.
ReplyDeleteA nuisance it is, Trish. That’s the worst part. It’s so inconvenient and I have so much to do (as always 😆), but An excuse to buy new tee shirts is something to look forward to, isn’t it? Thank you so much for your kind words! Xx
DeleteOh no! Wishing you a speedy recovery without complications.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. That’s very kind of you! 😊xx
DeleteBless you for your gutsy spirit, Val! Huge hugs and well wishes for a speedy recover. Sending lots of love and hugs from us all here in France. xxxx
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you, Beth. The love and hugs are gratefully received. Xxx
DeleteI'm so sorry to hear this Val. I do hope it heals quickly as it is very inconvenient! You have my sympathy as I fell and broke my arm a couple of years ago and I hated being curtailed in my activities - not being able to drive etc. I'm so glad you have lovely little Zoe to cheer you up. Take care x
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Rebecca. Yes, not being able to drive is a real nuisance and inconvenient is exactly the right word! Zoe is a great comfort at the moment and is so loving, but I your kind words are very cheering as well. 😘 xx
DeleteOh Val how unlucky I bet its a real nuisance. This time last year my daughter broke her wrist and my daughter in law broke her ankle both were sliding down snow in park with the children but both in different places. I told them they weren't allowed to do it this year. Hope you mend soon.
ReplyDeleteOh my word, Anne! Both of them with broken bones! I’m not surprised you’ve forbidden them to do it this year. It’s the nuisance factor that’s the worst, I agree, but thank you very much for the kind thoughts. 😘
DeleteOh, Val! I am so sorry. What a terrible thing to happen - and yet - you are managing so well as you always do no matter what life throws at you. I'll be praying for your arm to heal quickly and completely. (Steph)
ReplyDeleteBless you, Steph. You are always so kind. I'm not half as courageous as you think. I'd have been in a miserable heap if it had been my right arm :) xx
DeleteOh no! What a pain, literally and figuratively.
ReplyDelete:-( Hope you heal quickly, Val.
Many thanks, Aidan!. I hope it does too. It's quite a nuisance being so limited.
DeleteOh Valster! This is not fun! I dread falls ..they are never good. Please take extra care!
ReplyDeleteI will, CarolStar. Ironically, I hate falls too, ever since I slipped and went crashing down on the school drive when I was thirteen. It doesn’t seem to stop me falling, though 😐
DeleteApart from the pain it must be so frustrating for you. I remember when I snapped a tendon on a finger it had to be strapped up for 6 weeks and very frustrating trying to do simple things we take for granted. Hope you mend swiftly. David.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the sympathy and kind thoughts, David. It is, as you say, frustrating as well as painful. I’m also limited in what I can do with Zoe. I would like to start training her, but I dare not let her off the lead until I am fully able-bodied. Patience was never my strong point, but patient I must be!
DeleteSorry Val…Heal well & speedily.
ReplyDeleteWhat are the chances…I took a walk with our dog on the very same day as you & it didn’t end well either. Face first onto a concrete sidewalk…& knee hit as well. Nothing broken…sore knee…facial abrasions are about healed.
Let’s not try that again!
Ouch! I’m so sorry to hear that. Wh would have thought it, eh? I’m glad nothing’s broken, but face first….ooofff, that must have been painful! Hope it’s fully better soon. My sincere sympathies!
DeleteHow did I manage to miss this post? Whatever, I did and didn't realise anything was wrong until I read your comment on my latest post. I'm so sorry to hear about this nasty mishap, Val. Sending good vibes for a hasty healing process.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, Cath. A silly accident, but all will be well soon, I hope!
DeleteHi Val - sorry I've been off - just 'frot' ...so haven't spotted you'd broken your wrist ... gosh - I fell over three times last year - edge of muddy areas and thankfully I survived with just being embarrassed! Reading backwards as one can with blogs ...I'm so pleased to see you're coping...and appreciate you coming over the other day (in your circumstances) ... with thoughts to you all - cheers on Mother's Day here in the UK ...Hilary
ReplyDeleteBless you, Hilary. People keep nodding wisely at me and saying these things happen at ‘our ages’ but most of those I speak to who’ve broken wrists did it much earlier. I’m glad your falls only resulted in embarrassment! Painful though that can be, it heals quite quickly ;)
