Wash and walk

I'm not lazy, really I'm not, but I dislike doing the laundry to such an extent I tend to let it pile up. A quick solution to this problem is to take everything to the outsize washing machines that many filling stations seem to have now. I've often wondered what the connection is between laundry and petrol pumps. It stretches the imagination somewhat, doesn't it? Mind you, I could happily entertain the idea of soaking my washing in petrol, but then I'd rather set a match to it than wash it. But arsonist tendencies of the material kind aside, maybe it's because they often have a car wash on the same premises ... you know, do washing and spruce up car simultaneously? Perhaps it's an efficient use of water. Who knows? Whatever the case, our local giant washing machines are at a filling station in Terneuzen close to both a dog park, and even better, a hop and a skip to the huge locks on the Westerschelde Estuary– always great eye candy for a waterways' lover.

So, last Friday, my daughter kindly offered to let Zoe, me and my washing accompany her, Lucy and her own laundry pile to Terneuzen where we both availed ourselves of the facilities. In our case, though, we didn't do any car washing; instead, we took a walk to the locks and along the waterside. It was a blustery, rainy day – note the cloud scape as well as Zoe's hair. No, she hadn't been to the hair dresser. It was the wind giving her that artfully swept-back look.

Both dogs enjoyed the walk as much as we did and then practised their cute impressions in the car while waiting for us to unload the machines.

Ah, now I can see! At last!

Some good sniffs around here, Zoe!

Ooh, wot you got there, Lucy?

Eye candy for me

Are we cute or what?

And just to show how wet it's been.
That isn't a lake; it's just water on the fields

The photo above is just one that shows how wet it's been here. Normally, the Netherlands can cope with excess rain. The drainage ditches do a fantastic job as do the pumps that keep the polders dry, but being a land largely below sea level, the kind of endless rain we've had has taxed even this country's brilliant anti-flooding systems. There's standing water and mud everywhere. We're just praying it will dry up sometime soon as we could definitely do with some respite (remember my green barge and damp walls?).

So that's it for this week allemaal. I hope you're all keeping well wherever you are. Below is a photo of Zoe especially for Rebecca. As my little pooch says, she can't help being adorable! :)

I can't help being adorable, can I?

  2. Hi Val, another interesting blog, thank you. I do feel so sorry for you and everyone who are having to cope with all this rain, sodden fields and endless mud. It’s very worrying for farmers too as their fields are so wet they can’t get seeds planted.
Your walk with your daughter and those two beautiful, adorable pooches sounds absolutely perfect and I do love Zoe’s windswept look. 💕

    1. Lorraine, thank you! Yes, the farmers are having a difficult time. They can do little with so much water lying on the land. We all hope it dries up soon. Life is tough enough for farmers without all his saturation.

  3. In France, the washing machines are in the parking lots of big chain supermarkets. I love it! While the wash washes, you do your grocery shopping, and the machine texts you when it’s done (even with a five minute warning!). AND, I did use one of the machines at a gas station somewhere in the Netherlands. I wondered too: “Why at a gas station?” We too have had tons of rain, but at least not too non-stop. The nice weather is beginning to settle in. It’s an El Niño year as they say. We’ll be back on the boat in May, heading east from Hautmont! Hugs to you and Koos!

    1. Ah, lovely to hear from you, Janet. Who’d have thought big washing machines could be a subject of such interest? I agree about how useful they are. I’m incredibly grateful for ours, and often do my shopping while they’re doing their thing. Hoping to see you somewhere this year! Hugs to you and Michel! Xx

  4. I love doing all aspects of laundry. M says it's my hobby. Great skies!!!! btw, I've seen those laundry facilities outside a supermarket here, and thought them rather strange... the only people I could think who might use them are the homeless, as not many boating types around these parts! Then again, I haven't seen any homeless people for ages. Maybe they're in Hope Villages...

    1. Ah TT, you must be unique in your love of laundry 🤣 I think those machines are useful for doing the really big items like duvets and blankets. Even if I wasn’t lazy about my laundry piles, I’d use then for the things I can’t get in my own washing machine. As for the homeless, I hope it’s good news you don’t see them, but the reality of Hope villages isn’t far off, is it?

  5. Good to know that the drainage is good to handle well excess rain. Here most cities get flooded even with a couple of hours of heavy rain because all the paths for the water to drain off are blocked.

    1. Oh Pradeep, that’s not good news. It must make an awful mess when you have heavy rain. I’m glad we have such good systems here.

  7. Hope you get some dry weather soon, Val. All is mud here too out on walks. I have a backlog of 1500 walks to add to my website. Not really, it just feels like it. 😃 I leave laundry for as long as possible too and rgen have a day endlessly filling washers and then into dryers. Hate it all!
Soon be Spring... I hope. Cheers. Aidan.

  8. What miserable weather you're having Val. I can sympathise as I know how depressing it is to have chilly, wet days and to see waterlogged fields. I sincerely hope the weather impoves asap. I'm glad you managed a bit of multi tasking - enjoying a lovely walk with your daughter while waiting for your laundry to be done. I actually managed to get some towels hung out to dry yesterday before the rain started - bonus! I love your photos especially the one for me. Zoe is such a sweetheart and always makes me smile.

    1. Rebecca, thank you for your lovely comment. I think everyone in this corner of the globe has been suffering from soggy soil, but it's lovely to know you managed to hang some towels out to dry. We had a beautiful day yesterday, for once, but today has been cold and grey again. At least it hasn't rained. I'm glad you like the Zoe photo. I always think of you when I take these 'ultra cute' ones :D

  9. Hi Val - fascinating about the large washing machines at petrol stations and then Janet with her nod to the French washing machines in supermarket areas ... interesting to think about! Washing a necessity sadly! But I do mine here so no need to lug around ... I hope that weather warms up soon - looks like were into another (more normal for March) cold snap this weekend - ah well - longer days cometh. I hope that green stuff is disappearing with its acetic acid rinse. Take care - but fun to relax with family, dogs and those long long beaches ... we used to go to one, Lelant, in St Ives bay as kids and play ... from the dunes to the sea ... lovely remembrances - cheers Hilary

    1. Thank you so much for your memories too, Hilary. I hear there are such large washing machines at supermarkets in the UK. That makes a bit more sense to me. Yes, roll on the longer sunnier days. We had a lovely one yesterday and I planted a lot of annuals in pots, but it's been cold and grey again today. Fingers crosse for the spring to come!

  10. Buy me a giant washing machine and dryer and I'll soon catch up with laundry and posts and leave laundry until once a month and one or two loads (light clothes & dark clothes) 😆.

  11. We seem to have had rain for months, the fields around Lincolnshire have been flooded and a lot of crops failed to germinate or rotted in ground. The countryside and lanes are starting to dry out now and there are signs of green everywhere and blossom too.
We have had an odd day when the sun shines, yesterday was one such day and we went for an afternoon walk along the Humberston Fitties. Back to rain again today, which seems to be the pattern.
Good to see Zoe and her friend out enjoying life. Take care Val, David.

    1. Ah, David, its the same here. Yesterday, I had real hopes the spring had arrived, but today it's been very cold and grey. Luckily no rain, but I'm sure it will come again. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your photos of Lincolnshire and maybe the Humberston Fitties too? Take care too, David.

  12. I do hope you get some better weather soon. It's quite depressing to have pretty much constant rain and to see the fields so waterlogged. There's plenty puddles to splash in though! Good to see that you had such a lovely wallk with your daughter and her gorgeous pup. Good to get the laundry done as well. I love the photos especially the one of Zoe - she's such a sweetheart and always makes me smile. xx

    1. Cathie, I can well imagine that. Do you have these types of big washing machines at shopping malls or gas stations over there? I do envy you setting off on your travels, though. I am so hoping we can do the same ourselves this year. xx
